Moving Picture Experts Group Audio Layer 3 Uniform Resource Locator or MP3 URL or simply M3U is a simple computer file format. Its main purpose is to store multimedia playlists. It first came out as an implementation in Winamp. It was then that the following applications supported its use up to this day. An M3U file is just a plain text file that contains the location of each media files saved in a play list. It then tells the media player what song to play when and which file will follow. The locations can be absolute or relative path names. M3U is also commonly used for creating a play list which contains data that points to a stream in the Web. In that way, the M3U provides an easier way of accessing that stream.

CD Ripper softwares abound in the internet. Most sites offer them for free, others for a premium. People, just like me, who have amassed a huge library of compact discs of music and movies are plagued with a problem. STORAGE. Where shall i put them now. And for others to come? The best way is to convert these cd files into a much more compact size and store it on my computer or on an external hard drive. A CD ripper will rip a CD track and convert it into any format you so like, mp3, wma or wav and save it. Its as simple as that. CD to MP3 ripper programs can do a lot of functions. And they have some cool tools you should also try out. Some programs allow you to design your own cover designs for that newly converted MP3 CDs of your favorite rock band. Some allow you to connect and sync with iTunes.

First things first, make sure you’ve downloaded and installed Winamp, the Flac with library support plug-in for Winamp, and iTunes, all of which are free.
There are two steps in converting your .flac files to .mp3. The first is to decode the .flac’s into .wav files. After that’s done, you’ll encode the .wav files into .mp3’s.

Steps in decoding .flac files with Winamp
1. Open Winamp and select Options and then Preferences… (note: if you’re using the “classic version” skin, open the Winamp Preferences by clicking the Control and p keys on your keyboard)

2. Select Output from the Plug-ins section of the left window, and then select Nullsoft Disk Writer. Click Configure.

3. Click the Directory: button so you can choose a location to save the .wav files

4. Navigate to the folder you want to save the .wav files in. I usually save them in the same folder as the .flac files.

5. Click OK to return to the Preferences window, and then Close to return to Winamp. Now select File -> Play file… and navigate to the folder with your .flac files. Select all of the .flac files by single-clicking the first file, holding down the Shift key on your keyboard, and then single-clicking the last file. When all of the files are selected, click Open

6. Press the Play button. Winamp will now decode the .flac files and turn them into .wav files. It typically takes about 20 seconds to convert a 5 minute song, but this depends on how “fast” your PC is.
Once Winamp is done decoding the files, make sure to set the Plug-ins -> Output back to DirectSound output, or the next time you try to play a file using Winamp, it will decode that file instead.
Check to make sure all of the .wav files were created.

For music lovers who just love to tinker about their audio files such as I, Visual MP3 Splitter and Joiner is just the tool to split and combine WAV and MP3 files. Whats cool about this tool is that its fast without recompressing the files. It can process batches and automatically detects silence. ID3 tags can be entered for each part from the splitting list and its just a matter of dragging and dropping files from Windows Explorer. For people from different nations will also find its multilingual interface useful. Try the v5.9 build 72 of the splitter since it has improved and added features.

Most teens consider MP3 as the “in-thing” to have. It is the equivalent of the walkman from way back. It stores digital music compressed to a much smaller size than a compact disc but the music is of the same quality. There is no need for storage devices to be slotted in to the unit to play music. It has similar components as the computer – data port, memory, microprocessor, digital signal processor, playback devices, audio port, amplifier and power supply. They come with software programs for managing files and downloading music. The unit is run either by batteries or by plugging into an AC adaptor.

It is often said that the MP3 was invented by Karlheinz Brandenburg, but he doesn’t want to take the credit for it. He attributes its development to a host of core developers with many others contributing. While he was trying to discover the discipline of how people understand and see music, he was tasked to reproduce the song of a folk rock singer without the background noise. So in collaboration with other MP3 developers they were able to refine the technology up to a point that the song sounded just like the original. This served as the break they needed and further research had the MP3 establish its niche in the industry.

Advanced Streaming Format is Microsoft’s own digital audio/video container format and is part of the Windows media framework. It can store compressed audio and video content that can be played back using a media player equipped with the proper codec. This extensible file format is designed to keep coordinated multimedia data and supports advanced multimedia capabilities that include extensible media types, component download, and scaleable media. Windows Media Video (WMV) and Windows Media Audio (WMA) are the most common files found in an ASF file and can use the ASF extension. These files can also include the metadata for the audio/video file similar to ID3 tags for MP3 files.

Advanced Audio Coding or AAC, a standardized lossy compression and encoding format for digital audio, was designed to resolve the major performance flaws found in the MP3 format. Its audio encoding provides more efficient compression than the older formats but does not reduce its quality and can rival that of an uncompressed audio CD. AAC makes use of two main coding strategies to significantly lessen the amount of data needed to stand for high-quality digital audio: discarding the signal components that are perceived to be immaterial; and eliminating the unessential in the coded audio, at the same time adding internal error correction codes.
